Presbytery Zones

As part of our organisational structure the Presbytery of Mary Burnett is divided geographically into three Zones –

  • The Northern Zone      incorporates the area north from the Mary Valley and Gympie to the Bundaberg area.
  • The Inland Zone           covers the inland congregational clusters in the Central Burnett, Kingaroy, Nanango and Murgon areas.
  • The Southern Zone      stretches from the area south of Pomona to the Blackall Range and includes the Sunshine Coast congregations.

The Zone structure was set up to make the presbytery more manageable and to enable business to be done
in smaller and similar geographical areas where familiarity with local issues and problems can be helfpul.

The Zones take up many of the responsibilities of the whole Presbytery in their regions between meetings of the full Presbytery.
They each meet three times a year and although the structure of their meetings may differ from Zone to Zone, the emphasis is on pastoral responsibilities.
The Presbytery as a whole has agreed that matters of property, finance and pastoral remain under the governance of the whole Presbytery.

The Zones report to the Presbytery at each of its meetings so that all may celebrate the work of the church in these areas.

The membership of each Zone includes, but is not restricted too, those elected by their congregations to Presbytery.
In this way, the work of the Presbytery, through its Zones, may be broadened and its responsibilities shared.

The ongoing role and responsibilities of the Zones may be changed by decisions of the whole Presbytery in session.
Zones responsibilities (under the guidance of the Pastoral Relations Committee) include Continued Education for Ministry (CEM),
the Period of Discernment (POD) program and oversight of Lay Preachers in their areas.

Each Zone has a Convenor and a Secretary. They are:

  • Southern Zone Convenor – Pastor Phil Smith + Secretary – Rev Lloyd Walker
  • Northern Zone Convenor – Rev Peter Taubner – all correspondence
  • Inland Zone Convenor – Mrs Heather Castle + Secretary – Mrs Judy Black
